Front Royal Police Chief Richard H. Furr wishes to alert citizens of a telephone scam that is occurring in the area. The police department has received numerous reports of a caller identifying himself as a deputy with a sheriff’s office and that an inmate left their number for an emergency contact and that the person needs to call a nurse at a given telephone number. This number starts out with the numbers “72” which if dialed then allows the suspect access to make long distance calls on your line and billed to you.
The investigation has proven this deputy is not an employee of the identified sheriff’s office and the caller identification is only displayed as coming from a payphone.
If you receive a call of this nature do not call the number as your telephone account will then be billed. If you have any additional information please contact the Front Royal Police Department at 540-635-2111.
